Be x 4: A Framework

Being | Belonging | Becoming | Begetting

Identity is not something we merely possess. It's what we practice, invest in, and ultimately generate. This framework explores four fundamental processes of identity formation and expression in professional contexts:

Being

The active practice of presence and authenticity in our work. This isn't about passive existence, but conscious engagement with who we are in each moment.

Belonging

The dynamic relationship between individual and community, between self and profession. Belonging isn't merely membership—it's active participation in and contribution to our chosen communities.

Becoming

The continuous process of professional growth and identity development. This isn't about arriving at a fixed destination, but embracing ongoing transformation.

  • Identity is not a destination but a journey
  • Growth requires both intention and attention
  • Transformation happens through practice, not proclamation

Begetting

Beyond merely consuming or adopting identities, we must ultimately generate new possibilities—for ourselves and others. "Begetting" deliberately invokes a more profound sense of creation than modern alternatives:

  • Creating new ways of being in our professions
  • Generating opportunities for others
  • Founding new traditions and practices

Core Principles

Identity requires investment

If we work for, on, and with our identity, it works for us. Ignored, our identities work on us.

Practice over Labels

We've become consumers of identity, relying on labels and weak verbs like "identify as." Real identity work requires active engagement and practice.

Generation over Consumption

While it's easier to adopt ready-made identities, authentic professional identity ultimately requires us to move beyond consumption to creation.
